looks like they thought they were down after the 1st bounce. it sucks

Captain is always responsible for decision to land due to weather, not the air traffic control.. Pilot induced over controlling is a factor here.. Diverting would have been the better option but there is pressure for pilots to land due to the costs of diverting. RIP

”UPDATE”, the pilot and co pilot unfortunatley

didnt survive R.I.P

“go-around”

Anonymous 04.20.09 at 8:48 pm

looks like it wheel barreled

Anonymous 04.20.09 at 8:48 pm

surely if there was strong winds
the safe thing to do is to close the airport till it calms down?

Anonymous 04.20.09 at 8:48 pm

Totally agree….

Anonymous 04.20.09 at 8:48 pm

the wind is factor only when you see the huge crosswind at the second bounce but why the pilot go for it with the front gear? ffs the md`s are not c-130..

Anonymous 04.20.09 at 8:48 pm

It’s happened because of MD11…

Anonymous 04.20.09 at 8:48 pm

plane usually bounces like that if going too fast but ya the wind could be a factor as well

Anonymous 04.20.09 at 8:48 pm

It could be the wind, sure. But what amazes me is the fact this plane bounced. What type of force must that take to do that, or was it the plane speed/pilot error? RIP to the ones who died on their job.

Difficult to land manually? You obviously don’t know what you’re talking about. I fly jets for a living and while the MD-11 may in fact have a CAT III autoland system, it is meant for low visibility situations. That airplane is in fact, easily handled manually and is routinely hand-flown in landings. Something catastrophic happened here and we won’t know what it is for probably quite some time.

it says so in this vid…

Anonymous 04.20.09 at 8:48 pm

exactly people died here and instead of leaving a nice comment poeple are arguing with each other who died when, and what the anchor said, that is my point. Im not laughing at what happened at all.

Anonymous 04.20.09 at 8:48 pm

No they didn’t.

Anonymous 04.20.09 at 8:48 pm

Wow nice way to be sarcastic and funny since this cost the life of two people.

Anonymous 04.20.09 at 8:48 pm

Yes, they’ve probably did use the autopilot, but the autopilot ALWAYS needs to be disengaged before touching down (Which was shown here). I don’t think there was any possible way the pilots could off climbed up for another go around since the plane touched down…

Anonymous 04.20.09 at 8:48 pm

Do you think they may have taken auto-pilot off and tried landing manually? If so that there was a big mistake. Landing a MD-11 manually is very difficult. Especially if there are some pretty extreme cross-winds. I believe (if pilots did not try this) after that first bounce they should have thrust up, and taken off again, but it clearly looks like the pilot(s) forced it down. I try and look at this in a positive way as well, at least they died doing something they loved to do.

Anonymous 04.20.09 at 8:48 pm

the pilots survived

Anonymous 04.20.09 at 8:48 pm

Japan news stations always keep information till they are sure about it.
