PEPCON Explosion

by Big Ben on November 22, 2008

PEPCON rocket fuel plant disaster.

The plant manufactured an oxidizer called Ammonium Perchlorate. Ammonium Perchlorate is not in itself a fuel but a key component. It will however explode if heated to a high temperature in a confined space.

No, this explosion was the equivalent of 250 tons of TNT, while the Hiroshima blast was 13 to 18 kilotons.

The thing that gets me about this video is the shockwave that moves through the ground, just amazing.

Anonymous 11.22.08 at 12:13 pm

“wow thats gonna be loud” understatement of the year!!

Anonymous 11.22.08 at 12:13 pm

I remember exactly where I was that day. I was 9 years old in the cafeteria at Elbert Edwards Elementary school 12 miles or so from Pepcon. I was up against the wall serving “time out”. When the big wave hit, I was almost tossed in the air(at least that’s what I remember, being a kid and all). I just remember everything shaking. I still wasn’t allowed to go out side though because I was already in trouble. So I wasn’t able to see the plume of smoke.

Haha, “oh that’s gonna be loud!” thats funny. I uploaded this video from the History Channel series Shockwave.

The explosion was the biggest explosion in US history…..2 people died and many injured from the explosion.Houses in Las Vegas were destroyed and ppl there were the ones injured.

Anonymous 11.22.08 at 12:13 pm

Anonymous 11.22.08 at 12:13 pm

Anonymous 11.22.08 at 12:13 pm
