I was on a Dan Air plane in the 80’s that nearly had a mid air collision over Manchester. We were seconds from hitting the other plane. It’s amazing how in just a few seconds your life can change.
Can somebody tell me, what is the name of the programme that was showedon BBC1 OR BBC2of what would happen if 2 737s collided in mid air over britain .(Liverpool or Manchester)
The pan am was stuck on the end of the runway. it wasnt the pan ams fault!!! He was trying to get past the other plains so he was clear of the runway! KLM pilots fault!!!
“While I’m sitting here in this seat, I make the decisions” ok… that is the most arrogant and retarted thing to say while flying an airplane. Why else would there be a co pilot and flight engineer? So that all three can discuss and reach a decision together. If van Zaten was to make all the decisions by himself, there is no way there is going to be a safe or smooth flight.
While I agree that Van Zaanten is hugely at fault for this disaster, has anyone considered that the KLM flight times are also a problem here? Perhaps if there was an exception in the rules for this sort of scenario (airport closures and aircraft diversions), van Zaanten may not have been as quick in his decision to 1) take off and 2) refuel at Los Rodeos.
it was the KLM and the pan am pilots fault.
the KLM pilot took off without clearance and he refueled the plane too much making it too heavy for takeoff.
The pan am pilot shouldn’t have tried to get past the KLM that was his fault.
This accident was caused because of one reason, Captain Van Zanten took off without clearance. If he had asked he would have known that Pan Am was still on the runway.
Robina may have caused this accident. I mean by her not getting on the plane, the KLM pilot missed an opportunity and the time to think “hey, what a babe” and this delay would have been enough to allow Pam Am to get across the runway.

The woman who decided not to get back on the plane and stay was the luckiest person that day. Love truly did save her life.

There should have been people on the ground with binoculars and hand held radios guiding the planes.

what about the turbelance left by the pam am?
Anonymous 01.02.09 at 1:38 am
Why?
Anonymous 01.02.09 at 1:38 am
Another reason was that refueling the KLM plane makes it more heavily, and it didn’t manage to take off, and then crashed into the Pan Am plane
